Life after a cancer diagnosis is different, no doubt. What makes it easy or difficult depends on the factors, or particularly the people, that surround the diagnosis of cancer. It could be friends, family, or professional acquaintances.
That is the reason it is not just our prerogative to address the cancer survivor's concerns, but the concerns of their inner circle as well.
Before that, let us understand who a cancer survivor is. Anyone diagnosed with cancer, whether undergoing treatment or completed it, is a cancer survivor. In other words, a cancer warrior. Because it is a war he or she is fighting not only to save one's body, it is to save one's life. It is a fight within, and losing is not an option. The focus shifts from merely destroying cancer cells to rebuilding a meaningful life.
Particularly with the current lines of therapy ranging from surgery to chemotherapy, from radiation to immunotherapy, and from diet, nutrition, and lifestyle management to mental and psychological well-being, the options are immense.
But all this requires a person who is willing to fight, a person who is willing to jump back to where it all started.
The challenges are many, particularly:
These things require a lot of help and hand-holding.
Let us start by celebrating those cancer survivors, those unsung heroes around us. Let us hear their stories. Let us learn from them. Let us get inspired. And in the end, let us not stop at that. Let us hold their hand and help them to not just recover and survive, but have a good quality of life beyond cancer.
Thank you.
